The Crack
Zion is full reasons to scan your surroundings, because you never know when you might see something you've never seen before - even if that thing is underneath your feet and not-so-imposing compared to the enormous mountains and canyons walls around you.
I acquired a permit to hike this trail, called the "Subway", and the most interesting formation may not have been the rock tunnel they call the Subway, but this perfect split in the sandstone through which the North Creek runs for several hundred feet.
In the controversial practice of "asking your subject to smile even though they don't want to", I placed a couple of leaves around the split to spruce up the composition a little, and I took a long exposure shot on a tripod, which was tricky to do when the subject was directly underneath me.
Even mother nature can benefit from a little stage makeup once in a while.
